Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis mocked former President Donald Trump in a recent interview for getting distracted and not delivering on campaign promises in the White House.
The Republican presidential hopeful sat down for an interview with KCCI in Des Moines, Iowa where he went after Trump for not delivering on key promises on immigration when he was in office.
DeSantis’ comments were sparked when an undecided Republican primary voter Jayde Fellom asked him what he will do different than Trump to make sure a border wall is built and Mexico pays for it.
“Yeah, look, I mean, that was one of the most famous campaign promises anyone’s ever made,” DeSantis responded. “Now he’s been in Iowa just in the last month saying, well, there was no legal mechanism he could get Mexico to pay. That wasn’t what he said in 2016. I was at those rallies. He was very clear.”
He claimed that Trump was unable to deliver on his campaign promises from 2016 because he was distracted with fights with the media as soon as he got into office. DeSantis pointed to Trump’s obsession with the size of his crowd during inauguration day as an example of his undisciplined governing style.
“He’s also now said that he only promised that Mexico would pay for a piece of the wall. I don’t ever remember him saying that,” he added. “I think it’s because he got distracted when he got into office. What did he do his first full day in office? He was arguing with the media about the crowd size at his inauguration. I will be focused and I will be disciplined.”
In the last few months of the campaign cycle, DeSantis has been unable to compete with Trump in the polls as the former president maintains as 45-point lead, according to Real Clear Politics.
